Overview

Made at Izhevsk since 1973 and exported under the Baikal name, the IZh-27 is the over-and-under that put a working double into more hands than any Italian gun ever has. It is heavy, plain, and very hard to break.

How it works

A boxlock over-and-under with a bottom locking lug, hammer-forged barrels and a stock that fits nobody in particular. Extractors on the cheap guns, ejectors on the better ones, and single or double triggers depending on the year and the market.

In the field

Rough shooting where the gun lives in a vehicle and gets treated as a tool. It has taken more game across Eastern Europe and Central Asia than anything with a name people recognise, largely because it costs what a scope costs.
