Overview

Beretta has been making guns at Gardone since 1526, and the 686 is the over-and-under that most working shooters actually own. It has been in the catalogue since 1985 and has outlasted most of what was launched to replace it.

How it works

A low-profile boxlock with conical locking lugs that engage recesses in the monobloc, giving a shallow action that sits close to the hand. Replaceable hinge pins and shoulders mean a gun shot loose can be brought back to face rather than retired.

In the field

Driven birds, walked-up shooting and rough days where a gun gets wet. It is light enough to carry and common enough that spares are never a problem, which for a working gun matters more than engraving.
