Chapter 01

Overview

The 336 is the other American deer rifle, and the one that answered the Winchester 94’s single real weakness. Marlin has built it since 1948, and Ruger has built it since acquiring the tooling in 2020.

Chapter 02

How it works

A round bolt in a solid-top receiver that ejects to the side, so a scope mounts over the top without an argument. A locking block rises behind the bolt, and the whole thing shares the Winchester’s tubular magazine and the .30-30 that goes in it.

Chapter 03

In the field

Exactly the Winchester’s job — timber, thick cover, short range — with the scope the Winchester made difficult. In .35 Remington it also does a heavier version of that job than the .30-30 will.
