Overview

Introduced in 1964 and past seven million made, the 10/22 is the rimfire rifle the rest of the world compares its rimfires to. More people have learned to shoot with one than with any other rifle in modern history.

Chapter 02

How it works

A simple blowback action feeding from a rotary ten-round magazine that sits flush with the stock — the detail that made the rifle. The barrel is held by a V-block and two screws rather than threaded into the receiver, which is why swapping one takes a hex key and about a minute.

Variants

Carbine, Sporter, Takedown and stainless, plus an aftermarket in which every single part of the rifle is available from someone other than Ruger. A 10/22 that contains no Ruger components is an ordinary thing to own.

In the field

Rabbits, squirrels and vermin around buildings, and the rifle most young shooters learn on. Where a country permits rimfire for small game it is usually this, and where it does not, it is still what people practise with.
