Chapter 01

Overview

Roy Weatherby built the Mark V in 1957 around his own belted magnum cartridges, on the argument that velocity kills. The rifle was designed to contain pressures nothing else on the market was being asked to hold.

Chapter 02

How it works

Nine locking lugs in three rows giving a 54-degree bolt lift, a fully enclosed bolt face, and three gas ports. The lugs are the same diameter as the bolt body, so the bolt runs in a plain cylindrical raceway with no lug slots to collect dirt.

In the field

Open-country and mountain hunting at ranges where the trajectory argument actually pays, and African plains game. The recoil in the larger Weatherby chamberings is a real cost, and it is the reason the rifle divides opinion as sharply as its stock does.
