Chapter 01

Overview

A lever-action that went into production in the 1960s and is made for Browning by Miroku in Japan. Browning calls it the only lever-action in a magnum calibre, and the chambering list has run from .22-250 Rem through .300 Win Mag to .450 Marlin.

Chapter 02

How it works

A rack-and-pinion gear drives the bolt body while a separate rotating bolt head locks up in a steel breeching ring, which is what lets the BLR take true magnum pressures. The detachable four-round box accepts pointed spitzer bullets that a tube magazine cannot, the trigger travels with the lever so it never pinches a finger, and a folding hammer serves as the safety at half-cock.

Chapter 03

Variants

The original Model 81 had a steel receiver; the Model 81 Lightning of 1995 moved to aluminium alloy, and the rifle comes in short and long action, with straight or pistol grip. There is a takedown version whose barrel slides out the front of the receiver, and the Black Label Edition pairs a laminated stock with a 16-inch barrel and a flash hider.

Chapter 04

In the field

In Europe it is offered in .308 Win, .30-06 and .300 Win Mag — all Swedish class 1 calibres for moose and boar — with a laminated birch stock built to shrug off wet weather. American Rifleman’s 20-inch stainless takedown weighed 6 lb 8 oz and went through more than 100 rounds without a single failure to feed, extract or eject.
