Chapter 01

Overview

Made from 1994 to 2007, the Gold was the gas gun that replaced a legend — the Auto-5, Browning’s mainstay for more than 90 years — and never quite got its due. For a time it was the only semi-auto that was not a Beretta that anyone used for serious sporting clays.

Chapter 02

How it works

A soft-shooting, easy-cleaning gas action whose system lives on in the Winchester Super X2 and Super X3 and the Browning Silver. The 3½-inch Gold was the first 3½-inch gas semi-auto ever made, and the early guns, stretched from the 3-inch, failed until Browning redesigned the internals a year or so later; the Gold 10 is a completely different design.

Chapter 03

In the field

Phil Bourjaily used one for doves and took an early 3½-inch to a duck hunt in Uruguay, where it turned into a single shot on the first morning. The 3-inch guns always worked, so a used Gold will serve faithfully on ducks and doves unless it is a 3½-inch from around 1998 or 1999.
