Chapter 01

Overview

Browning introduced the gas-operated Maxus in 2009, and clay shooters and bird hunters took to it warmly. The Maxus II is a streamlined revision with a new look and feel — sleeker forend, over-moulded grips, oversized bolt handle and release — while the internals stay largely unchanged.

Chapter 02

How it works

The Power Drive gas system pairs a longer piston stroke with enlarged gas ports, uses larger escape valves to vent heavy loads quickly and keeps residue out of the action, and Browning rates it for loads from 24 g to 64 g. Speed Load Plus sends the first shell from the magazine straight into the chamber, every Maxus has a magazine cut-off, and the back-bored Vector Pro barrel has an extended forcing cone.

Chapter 03

Variants

In Europe the wood guns are the Hunter, the adjustable Sporter and Sporter Ultimate, and the Wood Black Gold, whose black receiver carries a golden duck; the composite line includes 3½-inch Camo Max 5 and Composite Black guns. In America the Wicked Wing comes in Burnt Bronze Cerakote and Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat with a 3½-inch chamber.

Chapter 04

In the field

Browning developed the Maxus II for waterfowl and open-country hunting, with a super-magnum chamber for 70 to 89 mm steel-shot cartridges. ShootingUK notes the gas action needs a little more cleaning than an inertia gun; in Sweden its 12 bore is allowed for all shotgun hunting, from geese on the flight line to ducks over decoys.
