Chapter 01

Overview

Ole Krag, director of the state arms factory at Kongsberg, and gunsmith Erik Jørgensen designed the rifle, and Norway adopted it in 6.5×55 on 21 April 1894. Kongsberg built more than 215,000 rifles and carbines, Steyr added 33,500 M/1894s in 1896–97, and the last ordinary Krag left Kongsberg in August 1956.

Chapter 02

How it works

The bolt has a single forward locking lug, which gives the famously smooth action and, on wet ranges, a habit of shifting its point of impact. The five-round magazine lies to the right of the action behind a hinged side door: cartridges are dropped in loose, the door lines them up, and it can be topped off without opening the bolt.

Chapter 03

Variants

The M/1894 long Krag was by far the most common, with about 33,600 made in a civilian serial range for Norwegian shooters and hunters between 1895 and 1940. The M/1912 carbine brought a strengthened action, the M/1923, M/1925 and M/1930 were sharpshooter rifles, and the last Krags built were the M/1948 and M/1951 Elgrifle moose rifles — 500 and 1,000 of them.

Chapter 04

In the field

The 6.5×55 holds Swedish class 1, but a Krag is an old single-lug action: modern European ammunition can be loaded to the CIP maximum of 55,000 psi, while rounds marked safe for the Krag stay at about 40,600. Feed an old rifle the milder loads.
