Chapter 01

Overview

Tikkakoski’s first centrefire action, designed in 1967–68 and built from 1968 to 1989 — first as the M76, then the export LSA55, and from 1972 the M55. Nokia bought the company in 1974 and Sako in 1983; the last M55s were assembled in 1989 and the M558 took over in 1990.

Chapter 02

How it works

A short action loosely based on the Mauser, with a two-lug bolt turning 90° and the bolt handle doubling as a safety lug. It feeds from a single-stack steel magazine of 3, 5 or 10 rounds, takes cases up to 55 mm and nothing larger than .308, and carries 17 mm dovetails milled into the receiver for a scope.

Chapter 03

Variants

Standard, Deluxe, Trapper, Fullstock, Continental, Sporter and Super Sporter, in calibres from .17 Remington and .222 through .22-250, 6mm Remington and .243 to 7.62×39 and .308. The heavy-barrelled Sporter served as a sniper rifle with the Australian and British SAS.

Chapter 04

In the field

A short-action rifle for the lighter end of Nordic hunting: .222 and .22-250 for fox, .243 and .308 for roe and deer. The milled dovetails take scope rings without a separate base, which keeps an old one easy to scope.
