Chapter 01

Overview

Heym launched the SR30 straight-pull in 1996, Sporting Rifle records, a clear break from the Mauser-based actions the company had built before. Its ball-bearing lock was designed by Peter Fortner junior, who had earlier used ball bearings to lock the Anschütz 1827 Fortner.

Chapter 02

How it works

Six ball bearings in the bolt head lock into a groove in the receiver, and Heym had the action tested at the Suhl proof house up to 8,000 bar. Pushing the horizontally swinging bolt handle past a felt detent cocks the striker, easing it back to the detent decocks it, and a bolt-handle lock stops a branch from opening or cocking the rifle.

Chapter 03

Variants

Heym builds it in normal (N), large (G) and mini calibre lengths, from .222 Rem. through 9.3×62 to 8×68 S and .375 Ruger, with left-hand actions in normal and large. The 2009 catalogue listed Klassisch, Standard, Keiler and Concord; the current range runs from the SR 30 Ranger family to the synthetic-stocked Offroad and the Varmint-X.

In the field

Sporting Rifle judged it designed with driven hunting in mind: in a fast string each stroke ends cocked, while a single stalking shot means pushing the handle that last bit forward. The short Keiler model, with a 50 cm barrel and luminous sight, was built for short-range shooting such as wild boar.
