Chapter 01

Overview

Husqvarna built sporting rifles at Huskvarna from the 1870s until 1970, and the 1640 of 1954 is the one most Swedish hunting families still have in the cabinet. It put a properly finished Mauser-pattern rifle in 6.5×55 into ordinary hands.

How it works

A commercial FN Mauser 98 action under a Swedish walnut stock, with Husqvarna’s own barrel and a hinged floorplate. Later guns moved to Husqvarna’s own HVA 1600 action, which is why an 1640 and a 1600 can look near-identical and share almost nothing inside.

In the field

Moose, and everything else in the same forest. The 6.5×55 it was usually chambered in remains the Swedish moose cartridge, and a rifle built for it in the 1950s is still doing exactly the work it was made for.
