Chapter 01

Overview

Husqvarna’s first medium-calibre bolt rifles were built on the same action as the army’s Mauser m/96, made from about 1927 to 1942 and known as the Model 46. They were commercial versions of the m/94 and m/96, sold as sporting rifles from Huskvarna.

Chapter 02

How it works

The m/96 pattern underneath: two forward lugs, cock-on-closing, and a five-round internal magazine. Husqvarna put it under a sporting stock and chambered it mostly for 6.5×55, 9.3×57 and 9.3×62.

Chapter 03

Variants

The Model 46 ran as the 46A, 46AN and 46B. After the war Husqvarna built the Model 640 series on m/96 and m/38 actions without the thumb notch — 646 in 6.5×55, 648 in 8×57, 649 in 9.3×62 — not to be confused with the later 640 on FN Mauser 98 actions.

Chapter 04

In the field

A moose rifle by its calibres: 6.5×55, which meets Swedish class 1, and the heavier 9.3×57 and 9.3×62. Like any rifle on the m/96 action, it was built before today’s 6.5×55 pressure standard, so have a gunsmith look it over before feeding it modern loads.
