Chapter 01

Overview

Mauser’s own timeline puts the M 12 under 2013, as the rifle that brings its quality to an affordable price — “the best Mauser has to offer” for a new generation of hunters, in the maker’s words. It is still in the range, alongside the 18, 25 and 98.

Chapter 02

How it works

A full-steel action with Mauser’s wide loading port, the bolt head locking into the barrel with six lugs, a short 60-degree bolt lift and a three-position Smooth Roll Safety acting directly on the firing pin. The barrel is cold-hammer forged, the direct trigger breaks at about 950 g, and the detachable magazine staggers its rounds; a manual cocking system is available as an option.

Chapter 03

Variants

The current line is the Pure, Trail, Max and Extreme, in walnut, laminated beech or polymer stocks; the synthetic-stocked Extreme was offered from the rifle’s first year. Standard calibres hold 5+1 and magnums 4+1, the magnums on a 62 cm barrel.

Chapter 04

In the field

The calibre list reads like a Nordic hunter’s: 6.5×55, 7×64, 8×57 IS, .30-06 and 9.3×62, with 7 mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag in the magnum group. Mauser weighs the standard rifle at about 3.1 kg, light enough for a day on foot.
