Chapter 01

Overview

The 140 is Merkel’s boxlock side-by-side double rifle, a Meisterstück made in Suhl with a large share of hand work. The heavier Safari 140AE applies the same layout to African big game.

Chapter 02

How it works

Anson & Deeley locks sit in a steel action locked by a Greener crossbolt with double underlugs, and the barrels are soldered; the calibre-matched 20-bore action adds weight, which Merkel says makes the recoil more comfortable. The front trigger carries a set trigger for the precise shot, and driven-hunt sights and a pre-fitted swing mount are standard.

Chapter 03

Variants

The 140 comes in 7×65R, .30-06, .30R Blaser, 8×57IRS and 9.3×74R at about 3.4 kg. The Safari 140AE takes .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, .470 NE and .500 NE, with ejectors, an express sight with folding leaves, a hinged front trigger and a weight from 4.6 kg; the 141 is a slimmer variant of the 140 with short barrels.

Chapter 04

In the field

Standard driven-hunt sights and a set front trigger equip the 140 for both the quick shot and the careful one, and spare 20/76 shotgun or combination barrels widen what it can do. Merkel calls the 140AE the working tool and favourite of many professional hunters, with every mechanical system duplicated so that each works on its own when life and limb are at stake.
