Chapter 01

Overview

Merkel has built guns at Suhl since 1898, and the Model 141 is its sidelock double rifle — the German answer to a London best, made in a town that has been making barrels since the sixteenth century.

Chapter 02

How it works

Two rifled barrels regulated to cross at a set distance, held by a Greener crossbolt, with the locks built on detachable sideplates that can be lifted out for service. A double rifle is two single-shot rifles sharing a stock, and the regulation is what makes them one gun.

Chapter 03

In the field

Driven boar in European forest, where two shots come faster from a double than from anything else and a third is rarely relevant. In 9.3×74R it is also a perfectly serious rifle for anything on the continent.
