Chapter 01

Overview

The BBF B4 is Merkel’s over-and-under combination gun, a shot barrel over a rifle barrel, from its modern MEM line rather than the hand-built Meisterstücke. Merkel’s own history shows a B4 from 2008.

Chapter 02

How it works

A single box lock with a hand cocker on the grip lets the gun be carried uncocked and cocked quickly when needed, and it decocks automatically on opening; the removable Jäger tilting block locks steel on steel. Twin fine triggers allow precise shooting, and the lower rifle barrel adjusts horizontally and vertically under the forend.

Chapter 03

Variants

The B4 Bergstutzen uses the same single-lock system with two rifle barrels of different calibres, and can later take a combination-gun spare barrel; the B3 is the two-lock sister. Engraving runs from a black action through Jagd, Jena, Weimar and Erfurt to Suhl.

Chapter 04

In the field

A gun for the mixed day: rifle barrels from .222 Rem and 6.5×55 through .308 and .30-06 to 8×57IRS and 9.3×74R, under a 12/76 or 20/76 shot barrel proofed for steel shot, at about 3.1 kg. The Suhl tilt-up mount keeps the point of impact identical every time it goes back on.
