Chapter 01

Overview

The SR1 is Merkel’s semi-automatic hunting rifle, presented in 2006 and originally developed with Heckler & Koch; its technology is closely related to the Bundeswehr’s G36 rifle. Merkel still lists it in Basic and Standard versions.

Chapter 02

How it works

A self-cleaning gas system drives a rotating bolt head with six locking lugs, and the rifle only fires when the bolt is properly locked. On first loading the charging handle does not slam forward but is pushed quietly home, and the free-floating barrel carries driven-hunt sights.

Chapter 03

Variants

The Basic is the plain, robust tool for everyday hunting; the Standard adds a stock adjustable for cast and drop and takes down without tools to a pack size comparable with a break-action gun. Merkel says it was tested for function in a cold chamber at −25 °C.

Chapter 04

In the field

A rifle for the drive: the detachable magazine holds two plus one as standard or five plus one as an option, and the gun is 106 cm long with a 50 cm barrel. Calibres run from .223 Rem through .270 Win, .308 Win, .30-06, 7×64, 8×57IS and 9.3×62 to .300 Win Mag.
