Chapter 01

Overview

Named for Sako’s 75th anniversary in 1996, the Model 75 came out of the largest development project in the company’s history, at a time when its range had grown old. It sold well enough to turn Sako around, and enough to bring Beretta in to buy the whole company; the Model 85 replaced it in 2006.

Chapter 02

How it works

Outwardly a classic Sako, inside a new rifle: three symmetrical locking lugs, a push-feed bolt milled with its handle from one piece of steel, and a detachable magazine — something only the L46 had offered before. The receiver bridge carries Sako’s tapered dovetail, narrow at the rear and wide at the front, and the action cycles with the safety on.

Chapter 03

Variants

Six receiver lengths matched to the cartridge — I for .222, II for the PPCs, III for .243 and .308, SM for the short magnums, IV for 6.5×55, .30-06 and 9.3×62, V for the belted magnums up to .416. Sold as Hunter, Deluxe, Finnlight, Varmint and stainless, laminated and synthetic versions.

Chapter 04

In the field

The long IV action is the Nordic one, chambered for 6.5×55, 7×64, .30-06 and 9.3×62 — moose and deer cartridges in a rifle that can be unloaded with the safety still on. Bought used, it gives Sako’s premium build of the late 1990s at a second-hand price.
