Chapter 01

Overview

The L46 of 1946 was Sako’s small-game rifle, and in 1955, the year exports first outsold the home market, it was the company’s most popular model abroad. Later named the L461 Vixen, it became the base on which Sako built the larger L57 and L61.

Chapter 02

How it works

A short action for small cartridges. The original L46 fed from a detachable magazine; the L461 Vixen of 1961 moved to a fixed magazine with a hinged floorplate. From 1987 the same action was sold in Europe as the AI.

Chapter 03

Variants

The L46 came in a long list of small calibres, from .22 Hornet and .222 Remington to Sako’s own 7×33. The L461 settled on .17 Remington, .222, .222 Magnum and .223, and a PPC version for .22 and 6 mm PPC followed from 1987 to 1992.

Chapter 04

In the field

The L461 was very popular in Finland and Sweden, above all in .222 Remington. Its forerunner’s 7×33 Sako was a cartridge made for capercaillie and black grouse — the bird hunt of Finland, Sweden and Norway.
