Chapter 01

Overview

Launched in 2013 and built in the same factory as the Mauser M12, with which it shares many parts, the 101 is Sauer’s classic, non-modular bolt rifle. Sauer pitches it at the hunter who wants its precision, smooth bolt and balance without a switch-barrel system.

Chapter 02

How it works

Six lugs lock directly into the barrel with a 60-degree bolt throw, and the barrel is press-fitted into the receiver with heat rather than threaded. Ever-Rest bedding puts a metal block around the front action screw, the Dura Safe slide is a direct firing-pin safety, the Classic’s direct trigger breaks at 950 g, and the receiver takes Remington 700 pattern mounts.

Chapter 03

Variants

It launched as the walnut Classic and the synthetic Classic XT, since joined by Artemis, Classic XTA, Forest, Forest XT, GTI, Highland XTX and Select; Sauer’s current range also lists Elegance, Fieldshoot, Silence GTI and Wolverine. The Classic comes left-handed at no extra cost.

Chapter 04

In the field

The Classic is chambered from .243 Win and 6.5×55 to 8×57 IS and 9.3×62, with .300 Win Mag and 7mm Rem Mag as magnums — a list built around the classic Nordic moose cartridges. It weighs about 3,050 g with a 510 mm barrel threaded M15×1, and holds five rounds, four in magnum.
