Chapter 01

Overview

Launched in 2015 as the direct successor to the Sauer 202, the 404 is Sauer’s modular switch-barrel bolt rifle, chambered from .243 Win up to .404 Jeffery. It looks like the 202 from the outside, but its parts do not necessarily interchange with it.

Chapter 02

How it works

A manual cocking lever replaces the 202’s push-button safety, one receiver serves both magnum and standard cartridges, and a change of cartridge group needs only a new bolt head rather than a whole bolt. A 5 mm hex key built into the front sling stud strips the forend, swaps barrels and sets the trigger to 550, 750, 1,000 or 1,250 g, and scopes sit on Sauer’s own integrated quick-detach mount.

Chapter 03

Variants

Gun Mart’s review lists the Classic, the synthetic Classic XT with rubber inserts, the thumbhole Synchro XT and the carbon-stocked Synchro XTC. Standard barrels run from .243 Win and 6.5×55 to 8×57 IS and 9.3×62; magnum barrels from 7mm Rem Mag and 8×68 S to .375 H&H, .404 Jeffery and 10.3×60R.

Chapter 04

In the field

Gun Mart called the Classic XT a near-perfect driven-game rifle, and with a larger scope an all-rounder. The magazine release can be locked so the magazine is not lost on the hunt, and the barrel system lets one rifle move between a standard calibre and a magnum.
