Chapter 01

Overview

Sauer built the 202 from 1993 to 2015 as a lightweight, modular bolt rifle, imported to the United States by SIG Arms. Its point was that almost everything could be swapped — barrels, bolts, calibres — on one receiver.

Chapter 02

How it works

The barrel comes off with a 5 mm hex key. The standard receiver serves both mini and short-action cartridges with different bolts — three lugs for .222 and .223, three for .22-250 and .243, six for 6.5×55 through 9.3×62 — while the magnums have their own receiver with a larger barrel tenon. The receiver is steel, or aluminium in a version 470 g lighter.

Chapter 03

Variants

The 2013 catalogue listed the Classic, Classic XT, Elegance, Forest, Forest XT, Hatari, Hatari XT, Highland, GTI, Wolverine, Hardwood, Yukon, Outback, Synchro XT and Synchro XC, the Schwarzwild and the Stutzen Elegance, plus a Take Down version.

Chapter 04

In the field

A 202 bought with one barrel can grow: a 6.5×55 for the stalking season and a 9.3×62 for the drives share one standard receiver, changed over with a single hex key. Magnum barrels need the magnum receiver, so a standard rifle cannot be turned into a .300 Win Mag.
