Chapter 01

Overview

Otterup’s hunting-rifle line began with the M54 in 1954, the first wholly Danish-built hunting rifle; the Model 60 arrived around 1960, and was followed by the Model 65 and then the 65DL. Every one was hand-built in walnut and steel — they sold out as fast as they were made, and took so long to make that they never turned a profit.

Chapter 02

How it works

The Schultz & Larsen action locks with four lugs at the rear of the bolt, which makes it extremely strong and keeps the bolt lift low. The Model 65 went back to a two-position wing safety, has a vaguely cartridge-shaped ejection port narrowing at the front, and like every S&L safety it locks the bolt, trigger and sear.

Chapter 03

Variants

The plain Model 65 added the .308 and .358 Norma belted magnums to the 7×61 Sharpe & Hart the rifle was built around. The 65DL followed with a new up-and-down wing safety, a slightly larger ejection port and about a dozen chamberings from .22-250 to .458 Winchester Magnum.

Chapter 04

In the field

Rear locking lugs have always drawn one criticism — case stretching — which matters if you reload for it. Most rifles found are 7×61 S&H, followed by .358 Norma; by 2010 Norma’s 7×61 brass and ammunition had only recently stopped being available, so check supply before buying.
