Chapter 01

Overview

The CL II replaced Steyr’s long-running Classic series, VISIER wrote, and Sporting Shooter reads it as a modified Classic that revives its traditional European stock. With the synthetic SX version it also took over from the Pro Hunter.

Chapter 02

How it works

Two pairs of lugs lock into a recess in the receiver, with a support lug near the handle, for a bolt lift of about 70°, and a roller wheel on the tang works Steyr’s 2+1 safety: fire, trigger blocked with the bolt free, and bolt locked, while pressing the handle against the stock also blocks the firing pin. The four-round synthetic magazine has a second detent where it hangs about 5 mm low and the bolt rides over the rounds.

Variants

In walnut as Halfstock, Fullstock and the short Mountain, with a 2-stage, forward set or double set trigger; the Mountain has a 508 mm barrel, about 3.35 kg and calibres from .223 Rem. through 6.5×55 SE and 8×57 JS to 9.3×62. The CL II SX puts the same action in a synthetic stock with polymer inlays and an aluminium bedding block, and the Semi-Weight carries a medium-weight barrel and driven-hunt sights.

Chapter 04

In the field

The magazine’s safety detent lets a hunter keep the magazine full and chamber a single round by hand, which VISIER points to for driven hunts, and the Semi-Weight comes with driven-hunt sights from the factory. Rifle Shooter found the 20-inch SX Mountain perfectly specified for everyday stalking, though its sample was threaded ½″ UNF rather than metric.
