Overview

Made at Steyr from 1903 to 1972, the Mannlicher-Schönauer is the rifle that carried the 6.5×54 into legend. W. D. M. Bell shot elephant with one, and its full-length stock is still called a Mannlicher stock whoever builds it.

Chapter 02

How it works

Otto Schönauer’s rotary spool magazine, machined from a single piece and turning the cartridges into line rather than stacking them, feeding a rotating bolt with a butterknife handle. The full-length stock runs to the muzzle, which protects the barrel and does nothing for its accuracy.

Chapter 03

In the field

Mountain and forest stalking, which is what the short barrel and the full stock were for. The 6.5×54 is a modest cartridge by any modern reading, and the record of what was taken with it is a standing argument about how much cartridge is enough.
