Chapter 01
Overview
Jeff Cooper’s general-purpose rifle made real: he had defined the Scout in American Rifleman in 1985, and Steyr unveiled the production rifle built with him in 1997. Cooper wanted it under a metre and under three kilos, with the optic far forward and iron sights in reserve.
Chapter 02
How it works
An aluminium receiver housing, a fluted hammer-forged barrel and a polymer stock that carries a spare magazine in the butt and a bipod folding into the fore-end. A magazine cut-off lets single rounds be fed through the port while the magazine is held in reserve, the integral Weaver rail takes either a long-eye-relief scout scope or a conventional one, and flip-up ghost-ring sights stand by.
Chapter 03
Variants
Steyr’s 2007 range listed .222 Rem., .243, 7 mm-08, .308 Win. and .376 Steyr with a 485 mm barrel, in black, stainless, Timber, camouflage and a Jeff Cooper package. The Elite was the heavier police successor, the straight-pull rimfire Scout RFR arrived in 2017, and the Scout II of 2023 mills housing and bedding block from one piece of aluminium and swaps the Weaver rail for Picatinny and M-LOK.
Chapter 04
In the field
Cooper’s brief was a rifle able to deliver a single decisive blow on a live target of up to 200 kilos at any distance its shooter could hold precisely, and the folding bipod gives a rest where nothing else does. In Europe 7 mm-08 was offered where .308 counted as a military calibre.
