Chapter 01

Overview

Steyr’s walnut-stocked rifle on the Safe Bolt System, its traditional lines drawn, the maker said, to recall the Mannlicher-Schönauer at a glance. It was offered as a half stock, a full stock and the short Goiserer, until the CL II series took its place.

Chapter 02

How it works

Four twin-opposed lugs lock into raceways in the receiver, a bushing encloses the extractor, and an ambidextrous roller on the tang gives three positions: fire, safe with the bolt free to cycle, and locked trigger and bolt. A set trigger, engaged by pushing the blade forward, came as standard, feeding from a detachable all-plastic magazine.

Variants

The 2007 catalogue listed the half stock with a 600 mm barrel from .222 Rem. to 9.3×62, a 650 mm magnum from 7 mm Rem. Mag. to 8×68 S, and the full stock and Goiserer with 508 mm barrels and open sights, all about 3.3 kg. An Antique finish with case-hardened parts was available on every version, and Shooting UK tested a lightweight Classic Mountain.

In the field

Shooting UK found 100-grain Norma and Nosler loads good deer bullets in a 20-inch .243 Classic Mountain and a 65-grain V-Max a good fox load, though some loads from that short barrel sat just at the limit of legal deer energy figures. Its walnut stock, with Bavarian cheekpiece and Schnabel fore-end, was in the reviewer’s view the best part of the rifle.
