Chapter 01

Overview

Steyr’s synthetic-stocked working rifle on the Safe Bolt System, in production from 1997 to 2018 by Shooting UK’s count. Grand View Outdoors reported it phased out after a 20-year run and replaced by the CL II SX.

Chapter 02

How it works

A stainless-steel action with four locking lugs and a grooved bolt body for dust and frost, a roller safety on the grip with fire, safe-but-loadable and fully locked positions, and a double-stacked polymer magazine that seats in two stages. The tough polymer stock, Steyr wrote, takes spacers to adjust the length of pull.

Chapter 03

Variants

Steyr’s 2007 range ran from the Pro Hunter, with a 600 mm barrel and about 3.5 kg, to a 650 mm magnum, the 508 mm Mountain at about 3.3 kg, Stainless versions and a Camouflage. The original stock could flex onto the barrel with a moderator or bipod fitted, so Steyr relaunched it as the Pro Hunter II with a stiffened fore-end and a laminated wood option.

Chapter 04

In the field

Shooting UK calls it built for hunting rather than heavy range work, with a flat fore-end underside that suits a supporting hand or a high-seat rail, and its calibre list ran through 6.5×55, 8×57 JS and 9.3×62. Used, it judged the rifle a dependable, accurate stalking choice.
