Chapter 01

Overview

RifleShooter called the 557 a brand-new rifle from the ground up rather than a reworked 550, and CZ names the two together as the series that replaced the ZKK 600. It was CZ’s step from the Mauser claw to a modern push-feed bolt.

Chapter 02

How it works

Twin opposed lugs, a short extractor and a plunger ejector replaced the 550’s full-length claw, and a single-stage adjustable trigger replaced its set trigger. The receiver is machined from billet steel with integral 19 mm dovetails, the cold-hammer-forged barrel is free-floated, and the bolt can be worked with the two-position safety on.

Chapter 03

Variants

A walnut sporter with an American-style straight comb, a wood-stocked carbine with iron sights, a Manners carbon-fibre stock, and the Sporter Synthetic that Rifle Shooter tested: 520 mm barrel threaded ½″ UNF, removable fibre-optic sights, 3.3 kg.

Chapter 04

In the field

Offered in 6.5×55, .270 Win and .30-06 in long action, with .243 and .308 in short — all but the .243 are Swedish class 1 calibres for moose. Rifle Shooter’s reviewer took a walnut .30-06 on his first driven boar hunt and found the Synthetic’s groups deer-capable from any position, feeding from a five-round magazine that tops up through the ejection port.
