Chapter 01

Overview

A drilling is a three-barrelled gun — usually two shotgun barrels over a rifle barrel — and the Krieghoff Trumpf has been the standard-setting example since 1954. It is the answer to a German forester walking out not knowing what he will meet.

Chapter 02

How it works

Two smoothbores side by side with a rifled barrel beneath, a selector that moves the striker between them, and a rifle sight that flips up only when the rifle barrel is selected. Regulating three barrels to shoot together is most of what the price is.

In the field

Mixed-bag walking in central Europe: a hare gets shot, a roe gets shot, and neither requires going back for a different gun. It is heavy, it is expensive, and on the right ground nothing else does the job at all.
