Chapter 01

Overview

The Sako 90 replaced the Model 85 in Sako’s range in 2023, an update of the same three-lug, detachable-magazine rifle rather than a clean sheet. It is Sako’s traditional bolt-action hunting rifle, sold beside the switch-barrel Sako 100.

Chapter 02

How it works

Three front locking lugs on a push-feed bolt, a broached receiver whose ejection port lets the magazine be topped up from above, and a trigger with five pull-weight settings that change without taking the rifle apart. Receivers come either with a machined-in Picatinny interface or as Optilock, which leaves room for open sights; some models add a carbon stock and a carbon-fibre barrel.

Chapter 03

Variants

Hunter and Bavarian in walnut, Grizzly, Adventure, the lightweight Finnlight and Peak, the adjustable Quest and Quest Ultra for backcountry hunting, and the Varmint for long-range shooting. Chamberings listed include .243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, .308 Win, .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag.

Chapter 04

In the field

Sako draws the line between mountain and backcountry rifles and traditional game rifles, and the Bavarian is built for high-seat hunting — the stand-and-tower shooting of a Nordic moose or deer drive. A .308 or .30-06 Hunter is the conventional pick for that work.
